Quality assessment
Third-generation California family company (Pitman Family Farms, poultry since 1954) operating a branded program across company and contract ranches. It clears commodity because the welfare and process claims are third-party certified and checkable: ~90% of ~500,000 birds/week are Global Animal Partnership Step 3, remainder Step 4-5; Certified Humane audited; first poultry producer Non-GMO Project verified; air-chilled (no chlorinated water bath). It is not exemplary: at half a million birds a week it is an industrial-scale operation and GAP Step 3 is 'enriched outdoor access', not pasture.
- Scale
- Industrial — ~500,000 birds processed per week.
- Feed & inputs
- Non-GMO Project verified; organic line certified organic. No chemical growth stimulators.
- Animal welfare
- GAP Step 3 (~90% of volume), Step 4-5 (~10%); Certified Humane audited. Raised without antibiotics or added hormones.
- Environmental
- Air-chill system saves ~30,000 gal/day of chlorinated water vs water-chill — a real, quantified process advantage.
- Transparency
- High — GAP and Certified Humane are third-party auditable and the step ratings are published.
Caveats
CHEF-RELEVANT: 'Free-range' at this scale has been contested — The Intercept (2017) reported a Pitman-supplied 'free-range' operation resembling conventional confinement. GAP Step 3 means outdoor ACCESS, not pasture-raised; a menu reading 'Mary's Free Range' should not be scored as pasture. Menus name it as 'Mary's Farm Chicken' (Mae Daly's), which implies a single farm it is not. OWNERSHIP (2026-08-19): Mary's is a brand of Pitman Family Farms, family-owned and operated in Sanger CA since 1954, three generations (maryschickens.com; cornucopia.org organic poultry scorecard). Family-owned AND industrial-scale at ~500,000 birds/week.
Family-owned poultry producer (Pitman Family Farms) based in California, raising free-range chicken and turkey since 1954; now run by third-generation Pitman brothers David and Ben. Chickens are air-chilled rather than water-chilled, and the line includes an organic tier alongside conventional Free Range and Air Chilled birds.
