Quality assessment
A real, well-documented multi-generation California family farm: Sid Weiser left teaching high-school chemistry in East LA in 1977 to farm in Tehachapi; the family now grows year-round across Tehachapi, the Bakersfield area and Lucerne Valley and built its business by selling DIRECT at Southern California farmers markets rather than through brokers — son Alex has run the market side since 1982. Chef-favourite status is genuine. It stops short of exemplary on one honest, self-disclosed point below.
- Scale
- Mid family farm across three California growing areas; acreage not published.
- Feed & inputs
- Growing practices not published in detail.
- Animal welfare
- N/A.
- Environmental
- Nothing certified located.
- Transparency
- High on identity and history; the organic status is disclosed candidly (see caveats), which is itself a transparency positive.
Caveats
ORGANIC STATUS — the farm was REGISTERED ORGANIC for many years but discontinued the certification because it lacked the infrastructure to maintain it. So a venue calling Weiser produce 'organic' is making a claim the farm itself does not currently hold. Credit 'Weiser Family Farms' as a strong named-farm claim; do NOT credit organic. Not yet linked to a venue row in our graph (carried from the CEO purveyor list; associated with LAVO).
Family-owned produce farm in the Los Angeles/Southern California area, selling peak-season fruits and vegetables (including potatoes) via a seasonal Community Supported Agriculture market box and Southern California farmers markets; third-generation family members, including Dan and Esther Weiser, run the operation.
