Quality assessment
A single-family, single-property operation with a genuinely unique production system. Fourth-generation Hammond family (John, Keith, Alex, Chauncey) have bred wagyu on Robbins Island — at 25,000 acres the largest freehold island in Australian territory — since the early 1990s, plus 4,300-acre Walker Island and a 450-acre Montagu base. Cattle graze salt-influenced island pasture and are moved by SWIMMING them across tidal saltwater channels during seasonal musters, then walked six miles along the beach to the mainland property. Named family, named islands, verifiable single-property provenance and a production method no one else has — exemplary on identity, with the honest caveat that finishing is a feedlot.
- Scale
- Family operation across ~29,750 acres of island grazing plus mainland base.
- Feed & inputs
- Island pasture (salt-influenced) for the growing phase, then GRAIN FINISHING at a feedlot. Not grass-finished — the marketing imagery is all pasture and beach, so this is the detail to state plainly.
- Animal welfare
- Extensive island grazing for most of the animal's life; low-stress tidal musters. No third-party welfare certification located.
- Environmental
- Island grazing system; no certification located.
- Transparency
- High on identity and location (family named, islands named, acreage published); low on feedlot phase detail.
Caveats
Not yet linked to a venue in our graph — from the CEO purveyor list. If a menu says 'Robbins Island', confirm Tasmania and confirm it is the Hammond product, not a generic 'Tasmanian wagyu'. Grass-grown, GRAIN-FINISHED — do not let the island imagery imply grass-finished. SIZE/SUPPLY (2026-08-19): since 2015 the Hammonds have partnered with the Hamblin family, who run a 6,000-head wagyu herd over 46,000 acres in central Queensland and the Darling Downs (robbinsislandwagyu.com.au/polled-wagyu.html). Branded product is therefore not all island-raised — the island imagery does not describe the whole supply.
Full-blood Wagyu cattle bred and grazed since the early 1990s by the Hammond family (John, Keith, Alex, and Chauncey) on Robbins Island, off Tasmania's northwest tip; cattle graze pasture without hormones or supplements and are seasonally mustered by horseback across saltwater channels. Beef is marbling-graded MB4-6, 7-8 and 9+, and has won Australian Wagyu Award gold medals (2020, 2021).
