Quality assessment

A genuine, differentiated Scottish salmon farmer with practices materially better than industry norm: ~1.5% fish to 98.5% water stocking density, rotational fallowing (one site in three fallow for a full year, plus 5-12 month sea-site fallowing), swim-through pens in strong natural currents, slow growth, no antibiotics or hormones, wrasse used as biological sea-lice control, MSC-certified feed inputs and a published ~0.8kg wild fish per 1kg of salmon ratio. Held back from exemplary by the certification gap below — the practices are real but currently self-attested rather than third-party audited.

Scale
Mid-size independent Scottish farmer; expanding (Skye expansion reported to roughly double production).
Feed & inputs
High marine-content feed with MSC-certified ingredients; ~0.8 kg wild fish per 1 kg salmon produced (better than 1:1).
Animal welfare
Low stocking density (1.5%), swim-throughs, minimal handling, wrasse for lice control, no antibiotics. Currently NO third-party welfare certification — developing its own in-house welfare standard.
Environmental
Rotational fallowing is the strongest environmental practice in the file; biological (not chemical) lice control.
Transparency
Medium. Method is published in detail, but the company left independent certification and its replacement standard is its own — self-certification is weaker evidence.

Caveats

STALE CERTIFICATION CLAIM (verified 2026-08-19): Loch Duart WITHDREW from RSPCA Assured in August 2024, calling the scheme no longer fit for purpose, and its membership had lapsed as of May 2025. The lochduart.com/our-salmon/the-loch-duart-way/ page meta description (dateModified 2025-12-08) STILL reads 'MSC certified feed, RSPCA welfare standards'. A venue repeating 'RSPCA Assured Loch Duart' is repeating an expired claim. Also note the MSC reference applies to FEED ingredients, not to the salmon — farmed salmon cannot be MSC certified (MSC covers wild capture). OWNERSHIP (2026-08-19): Loch Duart — the reference point for 'independent Scottish salmon' — is owned by SAF II Master Fund, a US investment fund (seafoodsource.com). Combined with the lapsed RSPCA Assured membership above, 'small independent Scottish farmer' is no longer an accurate framing.

Scottish salmon farmer based in Scourie, Sutherland, operating since 1999; raises a heritage salmon bloodline in native Highland waters at low density, marketed on quality rather than volume, and supplied to high-end restaurant menus.
