Quality assessment
North America's largest land-based trout producer (14 farm sites, 300+ employees, 22M+ lb/yr) raising rainbow and steelhead in flow-through spring-water raceways in Idaho's Magic Valley. In Oct 2022 it became the FIRST US trout producer to achieve ASC certification, and portfolio farms are BAP certified or in process — genuine third-party verification. Land-based raceways mean no escapes into wild systems. It is 'solid' rather than exemplary purely on scale: this is industrial aquaculture done to a certified standard, not a small artisanal operation.
- Scale
- Large — 14 farm sites, 22+ million lb/year, 300+ employees; acquired Clear Spring Foods.
- Feed & inputs
- Not published in detail in sources located; ASC standard constrains feed sourcing.
- Animal welfare
- Governed by ASC/BAP farm standards. No independent welfare-specific certification beyond those.
- Environmental
- Land-based flow-through spring water — no escapes, contained effluent, no sea-lice interaction with wild stocks. A materially lower-risk model than net-pen salmon.
- Transparency
- High — ASC certification is publicly listed with named farm entities (Riverence Farms LLC, Riverence Provisions LLC).
Caveats
Farmed, not wild. 'Riverence rainbow trout' on a menu (Marche Bacchus) is an accurate and checkable producer claim. OWNERSHIP (2026-08-19): Riverence Holdings LLC is a 50-50 joint venture between Spring Salmon LLC and KFF LLC (seafoodsource.com). Trade press has described Riverence as 'family-owned' (aquaculturenorthamerica.com) — the JV holding structure does not support that description. Riverence Farms, Riverence Brood and Clear Springs Foods are subsidiaries of that holding company.
