Equal parts neighborhood watering hole and tropical escape, Strange Bird has been nestled on a quiet corner of historic Irvington, on the Eastside of Indianapolis since 2019. Founder Neal Warner is a Rum and Oyster enthusiast, and on any given night, ornate tropical cocktails and platters of glistening shellfish can be seen floating through a dining room bedecked with bamboo and bac-bac matting. In the kitchen, Chef Kyle Humphreys composes distinctive and resonant bowls of Japanese Ramen, with noodles made in-house and bones simmered for hours. His team pleats dumplings by hand, and plates shattering-crisp cutlets of Katsu alongside deeply savory curry and fluffy rice. The experience is rounded-out by the long-tenured crews’ dedication to warm service. It’s Hoosier hospitality, desert island edition.

Join Neal Warner, oyster enthusiast, for a class about the bivalve with the cult following. You’ll learn to shuck safely, explore different species and growing regions, and leave with the confidence to serve oysters at your next party or holiday gathering! This class will not discuss oyster cookery – look elsewhere for po’boys and rockefeller. This is an exploration of oysters on the half shell. Tickets include oysters to practice with (and enjoy) during class.
We’ll have a server available to take orders for drinks to sip on during class!

Rum is a beautiful and diverse category of spirits. With its four century history, far flung producing regions and styles, and plenty of misinformation floating around, it can be challenging to know where to start exploring it.
Join Neal Warner, rum enthusiast, on a guided tasting through the many personalities of rum, with emphasis on how each style fits within the culture that produces it. You’ll learn the basics of how rum is made, and the history of different styles. We’ll taste a variety of bottlings, from flagships in their categories to limited releases. This class won’t delve into cocktails much, but will make reference to how certain styles are enjoyed in their cultures of origin. Looking forward to sipping some rum with you!
