(Last Updated 2/18/2025) Description and review of Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Company, located on S Street in Midtown Sacramento. NEW: See Hook & Ladder Revisited below.
After running an errand at the Ice Blocks on R Street, two friends and I stopped by the nearby Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Company for a weekday lunch.
It had been a while since I dined at Hook & Ladder, which is housed in an industrial domed metal building on S Street. My friends had actually been there only a few weeks prior for brunch but were game to go again for lunch.
We were greeted upon entering and were promptly seated. The dimly lit restaurant has a long bar to the right, and seating both indoors and out. On a nice summer day/evening I enjoy dining on the back patio, but there was a damp chill in the air and we were glad to sit inside.

Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Company Lunch/Review
The last time I was there it was for dinner (reservations recommended) and the place was hopping. However, clearly no reservations are needed for lunch on a weekday as only a few other tables were occupied while we were there.
It did not take us long to decide what we wanted to order. The lunch menu is not extensive, but the choices are sufficiently varied. We each ordered a glass of chardonnay to accompany lunch.
One friend ordered the Chicken Parmesan Sandwich (with garlic butter and basil) and fries ($15). The Chicken Parmesan Sandwich was accompanied with a huge mound of fries. The sandwich was said to be very tasty, but the fries were judged to be so-so. After eating his fill my friend took the leftover one-half sandwich home but left the fries behind.
The other friend had the Red Quinoa Salad (broccolini, beets, spinach, cherries, smoked almonds, spiced yogurt) ($11) with Chicken ($6). The salad was described as both hearty and delicious. The observation was made that given its size the dish could easily be shared – and the leftover salad went home with her.
I, on the other hand, had ordered the Smoked Salmon Salad (open-faced on Sourdough bread, dill crème, cucumber, fennel, red onion) ($15) and ate every bite. The combined flavors of the dish along with the tasty dressing really hit the spot. I found the serving size to be just right for a light lunch.
Vegans will be glad to know that Hood & Ladder is vegan-friendly and has a small vegan menu. Finally, be aware that Hook & Ladder adds a 2.5% Kitchen Equity Share surcharge to the bill.

Hook & Ladder Revisited
(12/19/2023) Recently, a friend suggested that we dine at Hook & Ladder prior to the theatre. It had been a while since either of us had been there, so I readily agreed. I volunteered to make the reservations.
The restaurant was very festive, decorated as it was for the holidays. Our table was waiting and we were seated immediately. It was not long before every table was occupied, as it was too cold and damp to dine outside.
Menu
My friend ordered one of the holiday themed drinks, the Clear As A Bell (rum, eggnog, pimento dram, citrus, warming spices (clarified) ($14). I ordered a glass of the Beaujolais-Villages Varennes ($12).
We also decided to share the Mixed Green salad (mixed greens, apple, radish, pistachio, goat cheese, sherry-dijon vinaigrette) ($14) and the Martini Pizza (creme fraiche, mozzarella, castelvetrano olives, red onion, basil)($19).
Review
My friend found the Clear As A Bell very tasty, but was disappointed that her glass was not even half full. Likewise, I can’t say that the pour of wine was generous.
The friendly staff and our meal made up for that disappointment, as both the salad and pizza were enjoyed. The pizza was very basic, but the combination of ingredients was top notch in the taste department.
I plan to keep Hook and Ladder in mind for the next time friends and I get together for Happy Hour.

We hold 108 venues in Sacramento, CA and could score 19 of them. This one is not among them, so it has no position — not a low one.
There is no score breakdown to show: nothing we read about this venue earned points in any of the four categories, so a bar chart of zeroes would look like a verdict on the kitchen rather than on what it publishes. What we did read is below.
v1.7.4 0.0/100 = sourcing 0.0/50 (named-farm 0 distinct, named-region 0 distinct, attribute 0 distinct, buzzword 0 distinct) + farm partners 0.0/20 (none scored) + registry 0.0/12 (none listed) + press 0.0/18 (capped at 35% of the 0.0-point evidence base).
Buzzwords only. This venue uses sourcing language ("farm-fresh", "locally sourced") but names no farms, regions, or verifiable attributes.
